Mine fire leaves $11m damage bill

Posted July 10, 2004 10:52:00

A fire has caused $11 million worth of damage to a piece of mining equipment in Kalgoorlie-Boulder in West Australia.

It was one of three major fires across the state overnight.

The fire started about 3:00am (AWST) today in a piece of machinery known as a "shovel" at the KCG mine site on Black Street.

The Fire and Emergency Services Authority helped mine workers put out the blaze which was caused by the engine over heating.

Meanwhile, fire has destroyed a home unit in the Kimberley town of Derby.

No one was home at the Archer Street unit at the time and damage is estimated at $200,000.

The cause is being investigated.

Fire also caused $40,000 damage to a home unit in South Perth.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Douglas Street by a passer-by about midnight.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.
